The Crystal Palace

Image
Untitled Document 1. Description: The crystal palace, a structure with an iron skeleton, and glass skin. Exposed iron can confuse the eye and give the impression construction is not yet done. The glass that allows you to see in can further this idea, giving a view as if the walls were not yet finished at any point. In shape, the building is basic, and a near cross like structure. A central area features a large arch, that is placed in the middle of a 2-tiered, concentric, rectangular structure, with similar dimensions as if it were to be the next tier in the series. Ultimately this forms a step type of appearance. Spanning on the perpendicular axis, crossing through the center of this first area is a hall that also features the same type of arched roof. The building would have been painted on the inside, so the same components of the structure are color coded, creating a pattern throughout the entire structure. 2. Summary: Tested in prototype a

Grand Central New York

Image
Image Assingment 16 1. Description: Grand Central Terminal, as seen in the photo is a rectangular structure, features a grand entry way that is comprised of 3 rounded arches, each separated from each other by (2) sets of 2, Roman-Doric columns. The arches form windows that are segmented with both horizonal and vertical iron bars to create smaller panes of glass. Not unlike the rest of the building which follows designs similar to those found in the Louvre, commissioned by Napoleon III, the roof is a green, and compliments the style. The exterior is moderately decorated, featuring some reliefs, and extrusions, as well as a clock above the center-most window. To some extent the building might appear as a bird cage. By now, the horse-drawn street cars had been overtaken by the protruding overhead railways. The new means

Vienna Narrenturm

Image
1. Description: The image of the Narrenturm in Vienna is of a 5 level, circular building constructed from stone masonry that utilizes a panopticon type of design. The façade of the building would leave the impression that it is solid all the way through, but rather it is a more of a ring, or donut, with a rectangular building placed in the middle to connect one side of the building to the other, without the need to walk the perimeter. Each level contains 28 tall and narrow, symmetrically spaced windows that are visible from the outside. However, the first level only has 27, as an entry is present where one of the windows might otherwise be. The placement creates an appearance of slits down the building as they are each in the same position, one on top of the other. At the top of the building, the roof vaults, and connects with the parallel, inner wall of this ring. In the middle the earlier mentioned rectangular building, or bridge divides courtyard that is
